Las Vegas Mayor bemoans Casino Closures

Last Wednesday, we reported that the Governor of Nevada, Steve Sisolak, had ordered with immediate effect, the closure of  all casinos, bars, restaurants and hotels in the state.

This action caused the Mayor of Las Vegas, Carolyn Goodman, to decry the forced closures of the casinos in the city, due to the order issued by Nevada state Governor, Steve Sisolak, for all casinos, restaurants, bars, salons and gyms to close, in the wake of the global Coronavirus pandemic.

Last Friday at a public meeting, Mayor Goodman made a statement concerning the enforced closures, whereby she stated: “Our economy depends on tourism and being open for dining, entertainment, gaming, sports. Very many people among the 2.2 million in and around Las Vegas live paycheck to paycheck.”

“I know we, they, cannot survive any total shutdown of the economy, beyond the immediate week or two.”

Nevada state Governor, Steve Sisolak, a few hours later, likely in response to Goodman’s comments, said without naming her directly: “Your life and the life of your neighbors and family members will always be more valuable to me than the perceived and mistaken economic gain we have by cutting this isolation period short or by waiting one more day to get serious.”

“I am not asking them anymore. I am telling them they must close their doors or they will face the consequences. Elected officials should understand the severity of the situation they are facing and become part of the solution.”

At the time of writing, the state of Nevada has had just over 100 positive cases of Covid-19, with sadly two deaths occurring as a result.
