Hopes For New Jersey Esports Betting Return (Update)

New Emergency Regulations released by DGE suggest eSports is legal contingent on competitor age

The somewhat confusing New Jersey position on the legality of eSports betting took an interesting turn mid-week when regulator the Division of Gaming Enforcement issued a set of Emergency Regulations indicating that as long as all competitors in eSports competitions are over the age of 18 years, the competitions are legal in the Garden State and open to betting under new state legislation.

InfoPowa readers will recall that earlier in the week it appeared that eSports betting had been excluded from the state law legalising sports betting following the overthrow of PASPA by the US Supreme Court last month. The apparent prohibition created a lively media and social media firestorm as the public rose up in protest.

The relevant section of the Emergency Regulations reads:

‘“Sports event” means any sport, athletic contest or athletic event not prohibited by the Director, including all professional electronic sports and competitive video game events that are not sponsored by high schools, do not include high school teams and do not include any participant under the age of 18 years.”

International Game Technology plc announced Friday that MGM Resorts International has selected IGT’s sports betting platform to run its retail sports betting operations as the state of New Jersey opens legalised sports betting.

IGT will provide its end-to-end sports betting solution at Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Borgata has opened for sports betting with IGT’s retail point-of-sale system, enabling in-casino patrons to place in-play and pre-match sports bets over the counter, effective Friday.

IGT currently powers MGM Resorts’ retail sports betting at 10 major Las Vegas Strip properties, and mobile sports betting on the playMGM app with IGT PlaySpot technology throughout Nevada.

“Deployment of IGT’s sports betting solution at Borgata demonstrates that we are ready to deliver the products, technology, support and service to make retail and mobile sports betting a reality in any legalised state, today,” said Renato Ascoli, IGT CEO North America.
